Secondary Glazing
Glazing for Enhanced Insulation and Noise Reduction
At Shaws of Brighton, our Secondary Glazing solutions provide an additional layer of insulation and soundproofing for your windows, helping to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. Available in a variety of designs, our secondary glazing options are ideal for homes with heritage windows or properties where maintaining the original windows is essential.
Horizontal Sliding Secondary Glazing
Our Horizontal Sliding Secondary Glazing provides an ideal solution for enhancing sound and thermal insulation, making it suitable for a wide variety of window types, including casement and hinged windows, as well as those with vertical bars. Designed with both practicality and versatility in mind, horizontal sliders offer easy access for cleaning and ventilation, without obstructing curtains or blinds.
The sliding panels within the frame allow for smooth operation, enabling effective ventilation while maintaining the appearance of your existing windows. At Shaws, you can choose from various panel configurations to meet your specific needs, ensuring a perfect fit for your home.
Our horizontal sliding systems can be face-fixed or reveal-fixed, depending on your preference. Additionally, our durable aluminium frames are available in a wide range of RAL colours, allowing you to customise your secondary glazing to complement your property’s style.
Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing
Our Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing is designed specifically for sash windows, providing discreet yet effective insulation and soundproofing. Ideal for traditional wooden box sash windows or any windows with horizontal bars, these units offer improved energy efficiency without compromising the aesthetic of your home.
The self-supporting panes slide smoothly within the frame, much like a traditional sash window, allowing easy access for cleaning and ventilation. The sliding mechanism ensures ventilation without interfering with curtains or blinds. For added convenience, our vertical sliding units can also be fitted with an optional ‘tilt back’ feature, making cleaning even easier.
This secondary glazing solution is perfect for homeowners seeking enhanced thermal insulation and soundproofing, while preserving the classic style of their sash windows.
Hinged Casement Secondary Glazing
Our Hinged Casement Secondary Glazing is one of the most discreet options available, featuring slim 72mm sight lines with no transoms or mullions to obstruct your view. Designed within our Heritage range, these units preserve the character of your existing windows while delivering excellent acoustic performance, enhanced thermal efficiency, improved condensation control, and added security.
Available with side or base openings, Heritage hinged units can be Customised to suit your windows, with hinges positioned on the left, right, or top-hung for flexibility. The butt-style hinges allow for 180º or 90º opening, and are engineered to avoid hinge drop, ensuring long-term durability and smooth operation.
This advanced secondary glazing system is capable of supporting up to 120kg, making it a reliable choice for both residential and commercial properties. Fully square and sealed, the units come with a single operating handle that can be positioned at any height, providing easy access for larger systems.
Lift Out Secondary Glazing
Our Lift Out Secondary Glazing is an excellent solution for windows that require only occasional access. These units feature an aluminium twin-track profile, providing a secure and stable fixing for larger panes of glass. Available in Heritage, Traditional, and Slimline models, the panels lift out from a secured outer frame, making them easy to remove for cleaning or ventilation.
Installation is straightforward, and a range of frame colours and glazing options allows you to match the unique character of your home. The integral finger lift bar at the bottom of the panel enables smooth lifting into the top of the outer frame, after which the panel can swing inwards for easy removal.
Ideal for conservation and listed buildings, lift out secondary glazing is perfect for maintaining the aesthetic of your original windows while offering improved thermal insulation and noise reduction. These units can also be coupled together or Customised to suit more complex window designs, providing an effective solution for even the most difficult-to-treat windows.
Fixed Secondary Glazing
Ideal for listed buildings and conservation areas, Fixed Secondary Glazing offers a discreet and effective solution for reducing noise and heat loss. Made from strong yet lightweight aluminium, this system is slim and unobtrusive, making it a popular choice in settings where maintaining the appearance of original windows is essential. It is also considered the most easily reversible glazing solution, perfect for leasehold properties where altering the primary windows may not be possible.
Our fixed glazing units are designed with pre-drilled countersunk holes for permanent installation, making them highly suitable for conservation areas. They can be attached directly to an existing window or door, or fitted with turnbuckle releases for easy removal when cleaning or maintenance is needed.
This simple and economical product is particularly effective when space is limited for fixing panels, offering a practical secondary glazing option without compromising the look of your property. However, please note that fixed units are not suitable for fire escape applications.
Bespoke Secondary Glazing
At Shaws of Brighton, we offer bespoke secondary glazing solutions tailored to your unique needs. Whether you’re seeking enhanced security, solar protection, or tinted glass, we provide a wide range of specialist glazing options to suit any property.
For older or traditional properties with windows that are out of square, our standard secondary glazing can often be installed with the help of custom finishing trims and a shaped timber subframe. When this isn’t possible, we can manufacture bespoke secondary glazing units, including arched, curved, and angled designs. These custom solutions retain the original character of your windows while benefiting from modern design and production techniques.
We can also secondary glaze stained glass, leaded lights, and historic glass, ensuring the preservation of your property’s unique features. From arched and bay windows to curved and circular glass, we have the expertise and facilities to bend and curve sections, providing a seamless fit for even the most complex window designs.
Drawing on our experience renovating churches and historic buildings, we offer a wide range of existing styles and templates to save on set-up costs. Additionally, our bespoke secondary glazing comes with a full range of RAL colour finishes and special paint options to complement your home’s aesthetic.
